Dr. Staerz received an M.D. degree from the Eberhard-Karls-University in Tuebingen, Germany, and a Ph.D. in Biology/Immunology from the University of California, San Diego, CA. Dr. Staerz provides some of the necessary funding as the company's founding member. In conjunction with Dr. Konigsberg (see below), he established Isogenis' research facility and initiated its in-house research program under the name Biohybrid, Inc. He is the inventor or co-inventor of three issued patents dealing with activating and suppressing hybrid antibodies (US Patent 5,078,998 - Hybrid ligand directed to activation of cytotoxic effector T lymphocytes and target associated antigens; US Patent 6,060,054 - Product for T lymphocyte immunosuppression; US Patent 6,264,950 - Product and process for T lymphocyte immunosuppression.) He is a recognized scientific leader in the fields of T-lymphocyte suppression and development and has published numerous manuscripts in prestigious scientific journals. Paula J. Konigsberg, Ph.D., MA - Senior Vice President of Research and Development
Paula comes to Isogenis from California where she had been a Senior Research Scientist at Vestar, Inc., successfully developing liposome-based drug delivery systems for immune disorders as well as bringing in extra-mural funding for the company. She and Uwe decided to start a biotech company in Denver, and Isogenis is the result of their efforts. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biochemistry from the University of California, Berkeley, a Ph.D. in Biochemistry/ Molecular Biology from the State University of New York, Stony Brook, and a Masters in Technology Management from The University of Denver.
Yan Qi, M.D., MSM - Chief Scientist and Vice President
In his 16+ years of experience, Dr. Qi has been active in clinical and basic biomedical research in both the biotech industry and academia in the United States and China. He has held positions as a surgeon at the China-Japan Friendship hospital and as a postdoctoral research fellow and a scientist through both the Colorado Health Science Medical Center and National Jewish Center, and is currently the chief Scientist at Isogenis. He and Dr. Staerz developed a novel biological mechanism exploiting a phenomenon called "engineered veto effect" for immune therapy. This technology has applications in transplantation, auto-immune disease, and gene therapy. Dr. Qi holds an M.D. degree from Shandong Medical University, an MSM (Master of Science Management) degree from Colorado Technical University, and a MS degree from China-Japan Clinical Medical Research Institute.
Xianghua Zhang, M.D. - Senior Scientist
Dr. Zhang received his M.D. from Shanghai Medical University, the second highest ranked university in China. From there, Xianghua went on to earn his Masters Degree in microbiology at the University of Louisville. After ten years of research experience in the Department of Immunology at National Jewish Medical and Research Center, Dr. Zhang is now the Senior Scientest at Isogenis. Xianghua remarks: "I am truly excited about our research project because I know it could positively affect the lives of millions of people."
Erin K. Spiegel, Ph.D. - Scientist
Erin is originally from Lincoln, Nebraska, where she obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in animal science from the University of Nebraska. Erin studied the genetics of reproduction in pigs as an undergraduate, and moved to Denver to work on her Ph.D. in human medical genetics at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, which involved the creation of a mouse model for autism and psychomotor delay. After graduating, Erin joined Isogenis and is involved in projects developing adenovirus vectors and viral packaging systems.
